Do you know that there is a simple device that can potentially help a knee injury?

Traumas occur often. This is especially true for people practicing high velocity sports. Knee traumas are particularly worrisome since the knee joint is one of the most complex joints in the body. When studying medicine, I was always in awe of nature’s ability to create something so incredible.
We often take our movements in space for granted. Only if our motion becomes restricted in some way, can we grasp the full meaning of what a gift it is to be able to move through space with grace — to dance, to run, to play, sports or to simply walk.

Our knees are a miracle in action. They have a very intricate set of ligaments which allow us to bend, twist, jump, run and move when we use our legs. In addition, our knees have a nice motion cushion made of cartilage, so our bones do not rub against each other. If an injury to the ligaments occurs, the knee joint may become lax and slide abnormally when you move. You may feel unsupported when walking. If the cartilage becomes damaged, often the range of motion in the joint becomes restricted, or the knee may “give out” during your walk.
What happens when an injury occurs?
When injury occurs, inflammation and swelling often occur, restricting the blood flow into the injured area and promoting pain.
When we are injured, the only thing we want is to heal. We want to heal fast, preferably instantly and almost magically. So, we start searching for anything that can bring us there quickly.
In this respect, it is useful to know that the key to healing many injuries is to support the injured tissue to the maximum extent possible. What does this mean? All of the different tissues in the body are made up of cells. To be healthy or to recover from injury, our cells need oxygen and glucose. Those two elements are the food that feeds our cells. Having a good and uninterrupted amount of oxygen and glucose is crucial for any damaged tissue to recover. So, how do we achieve this? On many occasions, we do it by increasing the blood flow to the area. It is our blood that is responsible for the delivery of the oxygen and the glucose to our tissue.
During this process there is one significant problem. Increasing the blood flow to our skin is easy. One can just use a heating pad. Increasing the blood flow to the deep tissues is not so easy. In fact, at times, when using only a heating pad, you can pull the blood needed for the recovery of the deep tissue and re-direct it to the skin, increasing the disadvantage of the already injured deep tissue areas.
So, the question remains — how do we increase the blood flow to the deep tissue of our knees, preferably without increasing the surface heat of our skin?
Here is where a therapy that uses Blood Flow Stimulation may become handy.
To achieve this, the device applies a specific electromagnetic frequency. This frequency allows an increased blood flow to the injured areas for about 4 hours. Therefore, the treatments usually need to be repeated three times a day.
There are many devices available to achieve this, but I will only talk about one, since this particular band helped me heal my own knee injury. I am not related in any way to the company that is producing it. I am just grateful that they offer something so useful. The product that I used is called the King Brand BFST diathermic knee wrap.

What does the term diathermic mean?
It signifies heat rays capable of passing though body tissues. The result is an increment in the deep tissue flow while at the same time the blood flow (the heating of the skin) happens to a much lesser extent.
The King Brand device is FDA registered and approved, indicating the relative safety of the device.
Similar to the knee one, other diathermic devices are available that address injuries in another areas of the body - elbows, wrists, thumbs etc.
I wish you a fast and full recovery with all my heart.
With a smile for you,
Dr. Ani
